How Does Wireless Charging Work?
Wireless charging also known as "Qi charging" is exactly as the name suggests, a charging system for your electronic devices that does not require any physical cable between your device and a power source. How does Qi charging work?
You’ve probably seen Qi charging and wondered, “How does it work?” Let’s break it down.
Qi charging uses magnetic induction. The charging pad sends magnetic energy to a specialized coil in the device. The coil then converts this energy into electrical power, which charges the battery.
Since Apple controls a large share of the mobile phone market, you might ask, “How does iPhone wireless charging work?” and “Does the iPhone support fast wireless charging?”
The good news is that most Qi charging products, including iPhones from Series 8 onward, use the Qi standard. This standard, developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in 2009, ensures that all Qi-compatible devices work together.
So, yes, iPhone Qi charging works the same way. However, not all devices and chargers support fast wireless charging, which we’ll explain below.
The difference between wireless charging and wireless fast charging?
The first Qi charging standard, Basic Power Profile (BPP), was created in 2009. BPP delivers charging at a rate of 5 watts. This power transfer is slow and takes longer than wired charging.
In 2015, a major breakthrough came with the development of Extended Power Profile (EPP), also known as wireless fast charging. EPP increased the transfer rate to 15 watts without losing energy during transfer, allowing for much faster charging times.
To use fast charging, both the phone and the charger must support EPP. However, EPP chargers can still charge BPP devices at the slower 5-watt rate.
Is Qi charging safe?
Yes, Qi charging is safe. The Qi standards used by all manufacturers come with strict regulations designed to avoid any damage to devices during the transfer of energy from a fast charge wireless charger pad to a device and has no more risks than traditional wired charging.
